Student housing update: 1923 Purcell Way rezoning and redevelopment

November 30, 2017

On November 21, 2017, the District of North Vancouver hosted its official public hearing for the 1923 Purcell Way rezoning and redevelopment proposal from Woodbridge Northeast Communities and Capilano University. Council is considering an amendment to its Official Community Plan that would designate a 1,217 sq. foot parcel of land adjacent to Greg Lee Way to be zoned as institutional, rather than its current status as residential. The bylaw under consideration also ensures that the building will be used for the purpose of university student housing. If approved, the land parcel would effectively increase the size of Capilano University’s North Vancouver campus to accommodate a new 60-bed student residence.

Capilano University was represented at the public hearing by President Paul Dangerfield and members of the Capilano Student’s Union also expressed their support at the hearing for the proposed development. President Dangerfield described many of the benefits of on-campus student housing, including the importance of offering a supportive, safe and comfortable living environment for students. As well, he noted the potential for the adjacent development to provide rental and market housing that may appeal to members of the campus community.

Public input is now closed on the proposal, which will return to Council for further consideration. Our next update will confirm the date and time of Council’s next review—tentatively scheduled for December 11, 2017. Interested members of the public can also sign up to receive minutes, agendas and notices directly from the District.
