On the heels of winning a silver medal at the PACWEST Provincials, the Capilano University men's basketball team has added an abundance of young talent to keep the Blues competitive in 2017-18 and beyond. Heading into his third season as head coach, Cassidy Kannemeyer is excited to announce the addition of seven new players from the B.C. high school ranks as part of this year's recruiting class.

Michael Kelly: 6'0" Guard, St. Thomas Aquinas, North Vancouver
Described by the legendary journalist Howard Tsumura on his new site as "Varsity Letters' 2016-17 'Best Player You've Never Heard Of', Michael Kelly comes to Cap with an impressive resume. With Basketball BC, the guard won U16 Western Summer Games Gold in 2015 and bronze at the U17 Nationals in 2016. With the St. Thomas Aquinas Fighting Saints, Kelly was team MVP in grade 10 and 11, Howe Sound Playoffs MVP in 2017, and a Second Team All-Star at BC AA High School Provincials in Grade 11 and 12. He has proven himself as one of the best three-point shooters among BC high-schoolers, finishing second in the three-point contest at the BC High School Boys Basketball Association's All-Star Saturday in April and scoring 16 points for the AA team in the Single A-Double A Game.

In 2017, Kelly was a recipient of the prestigious Quinn Keast Foundation's Howe Sound Scholarship, given annually to the "most complete player" of the Howe Sound Tournament in each of the AA, AAA, and AAAA Divisions, becoming the fifth future-Capilano Blue to earn the award. "Michael is the type of player who is consistently asked to guard the opponent's best player. Although he is the leading scorer on his team, it's his ability to get his teammates involved that makes him special. Off the court, Michael has mentored younger basketball players and has won the Citizenship Award twice at STA. He is a leader both on the court and off the court," stated his write-up on the Quinn Keast site.

Jack Teny: 6'3" Guard, Pinetree Secondary, Coquitlam
When Kannemeyer visited Jack Teny this spring, the rim of the neighbourhood hoop outside his house hung crookedly thanks to numerous slams from Teny and his brother, and his new coach hopes the recruit can try to do the same thing at the CapU Sportsplex. A graduate of Pinetree Secondary in Coquitlam, Teny was named Team MVP in 2013, 2014 and 2016, and Kannemeyer believes he has great size and athletic ability for the PACWEST. Teny's athleticism was recently on display at Burnaby's Edmonds Community Centre when he was named Dunk Contest Champ.

Michael Chany: 6'3" Guard, Gladstone Secondary, Vancouver
Michael Chany first met Kannemeyer when he was 11 years old, and they'll continue to work together on the North Shore. The 6-foot-3 guard was a Basketball BC U15 Blue Team member, and has reached as high as 12' 3" with his impressive vertical. His hops were on display at the B.C. High School All-Star Weekend where he was a finalist in the dunk contest.

"I first met Michael at Thunderbird Elementary school when he was eleven years old," wrote Kannemeyer in his Instagram post announcing the signing. "I brought him to my Vancouver Eagles basketball camps that summer and it's amazing to see how far he's come. Many people have helped Michael along his journey in East Van hoops and we thank all of you, especially Steve Anderson. We are all proud of you Michael, now let's get to work."

Nathan Bromige: 6'7" Forward, Lord Byng Secondary, Vancouver
Nathan Bromige heads to CapU next season on the heels of a successful senior campaign with the Lord Byng Grey Ghosts. During his Grade 11 season the forward was a First Team All-Star at three tournaments as well as in the Vancouver Playoffs and at the Lower Mainlands, and in grade 12 he achieved similar feats, in addition to MVP at the Lord Byng Tournament. He rounded out those accolades with a bronze medal at the 2016 nationals with the BC U17 Provincial Team. In April, Bromige was also named a BC High School AAA All-Star, and was a finalist in the slam dunkcontest alongside Chany.

Kiante Knight: 6'0" Guard, Killarney Secondary, Vancouver
Kiante Knight joins the Blues in 2017 and will look to add to an already-full trophy case. In early April the Killarney Cougar was named BC's best high school dunker, taking home the title at All-Star Saturday over future teammates Bromige and Chany. Earlier in his Grade 12 season, the 6-foot guard was named MVP at the Cougar Classic and a VSSAA First Team All-Star. Earlier in his high school career he took home numerous All-Star accolades at various tournaments in the Lower Mainland, including winning the Telus Jr. Boys Provincial Championship in 2015 and being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Joseph Peterson-Hannon: 5'6" Guard, Windsor Secondary, North Vancouver
Joseph Peterson-Hannon established himself as one of the top guards on the North Shore this past season, as the Windsor Duke was named MVP of the AAA Howe Sound League in 2016-17. A strong shooter from beyond the arc, the lefty showed his talent at the AAA vs AAAA game during the All-Star Weekend, hitting five 3s and tallying 19 points to help lead the AAA side to a 103-98 win.

CJ Campbell: 6'2" Guard, Burnaby South Secondary, Burnaby
A First Team All-Star on the Lower Mainland in each of the past two seasons, CJ Campbell will look to make an immediate impact in the PACWEST next season. With the Burnaby South Rebels, the guard was also a Burnaby & New Westminster Secondary Schools Athletic Association (BNWSSAA) First Team All-Star in 2017 and also an All-Star at the Killarney Cougar Classic in each of the past two seasons.
