Mural artists selected to beautify Capilano University
Four current Capilano University IDEA School of Design students are among a diverse group of artists selected to beautify Capilano University’s North Vancouver campus with murals commemorating the University’s 50th anniversary.
The artists will transform nine prominent exterior walls with their designs—with the work beginning today, Friday, August 17. Capilano University will officially unveil the murals at CapFest, the University’s free public anniversary celebration on Saturday, September 22, 2018.
The Vancouver Mural Festival is assisting Capilano University with the murals project. Many of the artists selected have enlivened alleys and streets in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver. An artist on one of the teams designed the jerseys for the men’s gold-winning Canadian hockey team in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The selected artists and teams are: Cristian Fowlie, Emily Huynh/Courtney Lamb/Ata Ojani/Brynn Staples; Nelson Garcia/Xochitl Leal; Tierney Milne; Erica Phillips; Taka Sudo; Andrew Tavukciyan; Debra Sparrow/Carrielynn Victor; and Drew Young.
“It’s an honour to be chosen to create something for the place where I found what I’m passionate about,” says Brynn Staples, one of the IDEA students who will transform a wall of the Arbutus Building, which houses the IDEA School of Design as well as the president’s office. “The IDEA program has taught me so much and brought me together with a group of people that I can see collaborating with for many years to come.”
“We are excited to have these artists illuminate our campus with their creative visions,” says Capilano University President Paul Dangerfield. “The murals will welcome students and the community to CapU and serve as lasting legacies of the University’s 50th anniversary.”
