The Career Development Centre is here to support Capilano University students and alumni prepare for a successful career. An important component of career management is understanding and adhering to professional expectations; the sooner that you become familiar with these, the better! When working with the Career Development Centre, students will be expected to:
Attend booked appointments. If you cannot attend your appointment, please email
firstname.lastname@example.org in advance to reschedule. If you are late, call 604.984.4965 to let us know.
If a student or alumnus makes an appointment with a career development advisor and does not attend any three scheduled appointments in a term without prior notification, their appointment privilege will be revoked for the term. The student or alumnus will receive two prior email notices before the policy is implemented. The individual will be able to make an appointment to see a career development advisor in the following term.
Attend workshops and events that you have registered for. Workshop and event capacity is limited so, if you are not able to attend, let us know in advance so that we can offer your space to another Capilano University student.
If a student or alumnus registers for an event or workshop but fails to attend any three workshops or events in a term without prior notification or cancellation, the remainder of their workshop or event registrations will be cancelled. In addition, their workshop and event registration privileges will be revoked for the term. The student or alumnus will receive two prior email notices before the policy is implemented. The individual will be able to register for workshops and events in the following term.
Be proactive. Review our online resources (www.capilanou.ca/career-development-centre) before your appointment and, if you have attended a workshop or class presentation, implement these changes before we meet.
Follow professional email etiquette. In your initial email, please let us know: who you are; why you are getting in touch; and if you have worked with us before (in a workshop or individual appointment).
Manage your own schedule. The Career Development Centre does not send out reminders about booked appointments or workshops that you have registered for. Please make sure that you enter these into your calendar.
Show up prepared. If you are meeting us for a resume review, please email your resume at least 24 hours beforehand and bring a hard copy along with you. Have a pen and paper, or your laptop, to take notes.
Stick to what you agreed to. If you are unable to make the resume revisions before your follow‐up appointment, get in touch with us to let us know; we can then reschedule to a time that works for you.
Take responsibility. The Career Development Centre is here to support you, but we won’t write a resume or cover letter for you. Resume writing is a skill that you will need throughout your career so use this opportunity to learn.
Follow professional phone etiquette. If we are unable to take your call, please ensure that you leave your name and contact telephone number in your voice message so we can get back to you as soon as possible.
Be mindful of our time. While we will do our best to support you, remember that we are working with all Capilano University students and alumni. Our opening hours are 8:30 a.m. ‐ 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Thank you! These expectations are designed to help you get the most out of your time with the Career Development Centre, and will be the expected standard of professionalism within any workplace. If you have any feedback, comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us at
