Workshops and Events are open to all Capilano students and alumni.
Career myths are all
around us, but knowing how to uncover the truth behind the myth is an important
first step towards your desired career path. Attend this workshop to
learn the essential skills for breaking myths such as: “Your career path
is straight, especially if you are studying Accounting, Engineering, or
Marketing.”; “Stay away from Arts and Science programs – you’ll have a very
hard time finding a career path.”; If you don’t know what you’re doing by the
time you’re in your last years of studies, you’ll never be successful.”
Do you apply for jobs
only online? Do you know about different job search strategies? In this
workshop, you will learn about some of the most effective way to find work, and
discover why meeting someone for a coffee can be more efficient than sending
out hundreds of applications. Be prepared for some hands-on work which will help
you develop a personalized action plan.
Do you know the best
way to market yourself in your resume? Hiring managers don’t need you telling
them what your day to day duties are – they probably already know them. This
workshop will help you to understand your personal value proposition and how to
write a resume that is unique to your experience and skills. Practice makes
perfect – bring your current resume!
Have you ever written
a cover letter, but weren’t quite sure if it was good enough? The cover letter
might seem less important, but is your opportunity to connect with the hiring
manager and add some personality to the application. Be ready to step into the
shoes of a hiring manager, review some cover letters and learn.
Have you ever read a
LinkedIn summary that made you want to meet the person right away? LinkedIn is
a powerful tool that professionals across many industries are expected to have.
This workshop will provide you with some basic LinkedIn profiling rules that
you will be able to use on your own time, but more importantly will get you to
practice identifying unique values and creating a strong summary that
represents who you are.
LinkedIn is a powerful
tool, but only if you use it. Having a professional online presence without
actively engaging with your network is as good as not having one. Position
yourself as an expert in the field - learn who to connect with, how to connect,
and different ways to interact with your professional network. Expect to leave
with practical strategies to improve your professional online presence.
The most crucial part
of an interview, and the reason why most people don’t get the job, is simply
lacking preparation. Maximize your chances of success by learning about what
you need to do in the days leading up to your interview. Figure out what you should
(and should not!) wear to an interview, discover how early you should arrive,
and why it is so important to be nice to everyone that you meet.
The way you sit while
you are waiting to be called into the interview room, the general conversation
before the formal questions, and whether you follow up after the interview to
thank them for their time, are all contributing factors towards the impression
that you give to the potential employer. In this workshop you will have an
opportunity to practice answering some of the most frequently asked questions
and learn why it’s a good idea to hike the Grouse Grind before your interview.
Networking is sort of
like the Brussels sprouts of a job search – no one likes them, but they’re good
for you. In this workshop you will learn that networking does not always have
to be the awkward, uncomfortable situation that you think it will be.
Networking events come in many shapes and forms – but preparing, knowing how to
start conversations, and knowing what not to do can help you to feel more
confident and comfortable.
