Capilano University welcomes Lara Duke as dean, Faculty of Global and Community Studies
Capilano University is pleased to announce that Lara Duke has been appointed as dean, Faculty of Global and Community Studies effective Aug. 15, 2019. Lara comes to CapU from Douglas College, where she served as Sport Science department chair since 2016.
Duke has more than 15 years of teaching experience, substantive leadership skills and extensive committee work and activity (including curriculum development and approval processes). Her background also includes involvement with the BC Physical Education and Kinesiology articulation committee, international experience serving on the Board of Directors for the American Kinesiology Association and developing program partnerships in China and Europe. In addition, her chair work afforded her the opportunity to support and be involved with undergraduate research and other scholarly activity including recent publications in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at peer-reviewed conferences.
Duke advocates a learner-focused approach in her academic life, and is a strong proponent of experiential learning, applied learning and indigenizing the curriculum. “The Faculty of Global & Community Studies is a learning community rich with opportunities,” Duke says. “In partnership with Elders, students, faculty and staff I look forward to supporting initiatives that inspire all individuals on their learning journey to think deeply about sustainable practices that enrich their regional and global communities.”
Duke holds a Master of Science in exercise and sport sciences from the University of Florida (Gainesville), a Bachelor of Science from Furman University (Greenville, South Carolina) and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership from Western University.
