8:30-8:55 a.m. – Check-in – Cedar Building

 

9-9:55 a.m. – Getting it Write: Understanding your assignments & making the most of CapU’s Writing Centre – CE136 (Writing Centre)

Written assignments are a core component of any university class. This workshop will introduce you to a range of university writing assignments, so you can recognize what’s involved in beginning and completing university-level research papers. We will also show you how to access the CapU Writing Centre’s extensive online and in-person resources.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Identify a range of different university writing assignments
  • Recognize what’s involved in beginning and completing university-level research paper
  • Access the CapU Writing Centre’s extensive online and in-person resources

10-10:55 a.m. – It’s not all fake news: How to use the library to find the real info – CE136 (Library Services)

Come out and listen to one of Capilano University’s Librarians welcome you to the world of Information. In this workshop you will learn how to access the Library’s collection of high-quality, credible sources for your area of study. When it comes to finding the best material for your essays and assignments, Capilano University Librarians are always here to help.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Describe some characteristics of high-quality sources
  • Use the Library’s Discovery Search to find credible sources
  • Name one specialized database that has research for their area of study

11-11:55 a.m. – Academic Integrity & Avoiding Plagiarism – CE136 (English Language Support Centre)

Did you know that using someone else’s ideas in your work without giving them credit is an academic offense? This workshop will ensure that you understand what constitutes plagiarism, why it is an academic offense, and give you several strategies you can implement to ensure that you are never accused of plagiarizing.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of academic integrity and plagiarism
  • Recognize various types of plagiarism and strategies to avoid them
  • Access support on citation issues through recommended resources, English Language Support and the Writing Centre

12:45-1:45 p.m. – Where in the world is the Centre for Student Success? – CE136 (All support services)

Capilano offers tons of free resources to help students succeed- from writing and math support to student union events and activities. Complete this scavenger hunt to learn how to access each of the amazing resources at your fingertips as a Capilano student!

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Connect with other new to CapU students
  • Identify available resources
  • Name one resource to try this semester
