Capilano University announces new Bachelor of Psychology and Sciences degrees
Two new four-year degrees launching soon for CapU students

North Vancouver, B.C. July 6, 2021 – Capilano University is pleased to announce two new four-year Bachelor degrees. The new Bachelor of Arts in Psychology launches in fall 2021 and the Bachelor of Science - General degree will launch in 2022. The new programs build on the two-year Associate degrees in Psychology and Science currently offered by CapU. The Bachelor of Science - General degree will be the first four-year degree in sciences to be offered at CapU.
“Adding four-year degree programs allows our current students in Psychology and Sciences to complete their undergraduate studies at CapU, where they have established connections with faculty and gained valuable experience,” says Pouyan Mahboubi, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. “These are exciting programs that offer students even more reasons to study at CapU.”
Students will be able to pursue a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology, Honours in Psychology, a concentration in Applied Psychology or a minor in Psychology. The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree will require 120 credits that can be completed in four years or 8 semesters of full-time study. Part time study is also possible. The Psychology Major will incorporate experiential and service learning, Cap Core requirements and a capstone course. The Psychology Honours option will provide students interested in pursuing graduate work with an opportunity to develop and carry out supervised independent research.
Development of the Undergraduate Psychology Major followed the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Guidelines. In alignment with CapU’s institutional learning outcomes, graduates of the Bachelor degree in Psychology will be able to apply their knowledge, skills and social cognition in teamwork, leadership and project management while enhancing their self-efficacy, self-regulation and professional direction.
The Bachelor of Science - General degree will be of particular interest to students who intend to pursue careers that transcend the boundaries of traditional scientific disciplines. The 120-credit program may be completed in four years, or eight semesters, of full-time study, or by part-time studies. Each student will choose a program concentration in one of three areas: Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Computational Sciences.
“Students will acquire hands-on skills in small classes built on student-centred learning approaches. They will develop as innovators, change-makers, and community leaders, collaborating with faculty, fellow students, and external partners on original research projects that span the sciences,” says Mahboubi.
The flexible and interdisciplinary nature of these two new programs allow students to customize their education. Students may complement the program with one of the many available minors currently available or in development at CapU, including Communications, Legal Studies, Data Science, Cinema Studies, Business, Psychology and Sociology.
Graduates from the program will be able to enter directly into careers relating to their selected concentration, and will also be eligible for graduate and professional programs in areas such as medicine, journalism, business administration, primary and secondary (K-12) education and a variety of science disciplines.
