Capilano University REB Directive for Research Involving Human Participants during the Publicly-Declared Emergency related to COVID-19

This directive may be modified as new information becomes available and will remain in place until the Publicly-Declared Emergency related to COVID 19 has been suspended. 

In accordance with Article 6.21 of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2018) and the Capilano University Research Ethics Board (REB) Procedures for REB Review during Publicly Declared Emergencies, the REB issues the amended directive below to all researchers associated with Capilano University conducting research involving human participants.

1. Ongoing research which has already been approved by the REB and not related to, or arising from, the Publicly-Declared Emergency (COVID-19)  

a) Resumption of research involving in-person interaction among researchers and participants shall be postponed or modified to avoid in-person interaction wherever possible;

b) Resumption of research involving in-person interaction among researchers and participants shall not resume unless and until approved by:

      i) CapU Office of Health & Safety
               Contact: Chris Sharp (christophersharp@capilanou.ca) for a Risk Assessment

      ii) CapU Office of Creative Activity, Research and Scholarship (CARS)
               Contact: Dawn Whitworth (dawnwhitworth@capilanou.ca)

      iii) CapU Research Ethics Board (REB)
                Submit to the REB (reb@capilanou.ca) confirmation of approval from Health &
                Safety and CARS, and information demonstrating that research involving
                in-person interaction is necessary and warranted.

All modifications to research design involving human participants must be approved by the REB prior to implementation. To apply to amend an already-approved REB protocol, please submit an CapU REB Application for Amendment Form to reb@capilanou.ca.

2. New research not related to or arising from the Publicly Declared Emergency (COVID-19) 

Research shall be designed to avoid in-person interaction among researchers and participants wherever possible. During the Publicly Declared Emergency, the REB will continue to review and support the development of research involving in-person interaction, but such research will not be approved unless and until approved by:

       i) CapU Office of Health & Safety

       ii) CapU Office of Creative Activity, Research and Scholarship (CARS)
               Contact: Dawn Whitworth (dawnwhitworth@capilanou.ca).

       iii) CapU Research Ethics Board (REB)

3. Review of research related to or arising from the Publicly Declared Emergency

Research related to or arising from the Publicly-Declared Emergency related to COVID-19 will be given priority for REB review in accordance with TCPS 2 Articles 6.21-6.13, and REB Procedures for REB Review During Publicly Declared Emergencies.
