Capilano University introduces Minor in Cinema Studies
New program offering for January 2022
North Vancouver B.C. November 8, 2021 – Capilano University (CapU) announces the launch of a new program offering that creates another option for students in customizing their studies. Beginning in January 2022, students from all faculties can elect to pursue a Minor in Cinema Studies when completing a bachelor degree.
CapU has offered a Bachelor of Motion Pictures Arts (BMPA) since 2010. The Minor in Cinema Studies responds to a growing demand from students in other disciplines wishing to take BMPA courses as electives.
“Building on the School of Motion Picture Arts’ technical expertise and award-winning industry experienced instructors, the Minor in Cinema Studies will provide students with the skills to recognize the forces that shape motion pictures and impact audiences, while increasing their own media literacy and critical thinking skills,” says Laureen Styles, VP Academic & Provost.
Students can complete six courses to achieve 18.00 required credits for a Minor in Cinema Studies by choosing from a selection of School of Motion Picture Arts courses and cinema-focused upper-level courses.
“This program increases multidisciplinary opportunities for students by combining courses that explore the aesthetic, effect, criticism, and theoretical traditions specific to motion pictures and related media,” says Michael Thoma, chair of the School of Motion Picture Arts at Capilano University.
With its emphasis on aesthetic and theoretical traditions of motion pictures and related media, the School of Motion Picture Arts anticipates this program will be of particular interest to students wanting to complement their Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration, or Bachelor of Communication Studies courses.
Registration for spring 2022 courses runs November 22-December 1, 2021. Students wanting more information about registering for courses to complete this program can contact the Academic Advising department in the Registrar’s Office.
