NORTH VANCOUVER B.C. – Capilano University is pleased to announce that discussions are underway with Woodbridge Northwest to deliver the University’s first, purpose-built, on-campus, student housing.

Woodbridge Northwest’s proposal to redevelop the 1900 block of Purcell Way adjacent to the University includes market townhomes and apartments, in addition to student housing. The collaborative agreement for the student portion would include a 60-bed student housing building on CapU land adjacent to Greg Lee Way and across from the Arbutus Building. The residence would be built by Woodbridge Northwest with an investment from the University, which would own and operate the facility. Woodbridge Northwest will donate a small portion of the land under development to fully accommodate the project. The development plans include proposed improvements to the gateway entrance to CapU, including increased pedestrian safety and enhancements to the connecting road, bike path, sidewalk, landscaping and lighting.

“Student housing is a priority for the University,” says Paul Dangerfield, president of Capilano University. “We are collaborating with the District of North Vancouver and Woodbridge Northwest to offer students a new and convenient choice to live while they study at CapU.”

“We recognize the housing pressures on the North Shore,” says Kevin Johnston, chief financial officer of Woodbridge Northwest. “Capilano University is a major employer in North Vancouver and our development plans will not only benefit students, but also offer new housing options for faculty and staff to live and work near campus.”

Woodbridge Northwest submitted a rezoning application to the District of North Vancouver in July 2017 and is seeking further public input on the proposed designs. A public information meeting takes place on September 12, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Birch Building, Lower Cafeteria (BR169) at Capilano University. The District is expected to hold a public hearing later this fall to consider the application.
