A pair of rookies from the Capilano University women's soccer team received conference honours from the PACWEST on Thursday afternoon.
First-year students Claire Ye and Adrianna Babinski were both named to the conference All-Star team, with Ye also being named PACWEST Rookie of the Year. Graduates of Dr. Charles Best Secondary in Coquitlam, the duo helped the Blues to a 5-4-3 record and second place finish in the regular season.
Ye quickly established herself as one of the most versatile players in the league, excelling on both the defensive end and at forward. In week two of the season she was named PACWEST Athlete of the Week after she shut down two of the top offences in the conference over the weekend of play, and she built on that success throughout the season.
With her speed and strength, Ye showed the ability to break up dangerous attacks, defend one-on-ones, and win challenges in the air and on the ground. A student in Capilanos Early Childhood Care and Education program, Ye also scored three goals to finish in the PACWESTs top 10 for scoring.
Ye is the first Rookie of the Year from Capilano since Cherelle Khassal in 2011, and the third overall since the award was first created in 2000 (Sofia Hidalgo in 2001 is the other).
For Babinski, she was one of the top midfielders in the league. The Arts & Sciences student was near the top of the PACWEST scoring leaderboard all season, scoring in the first game of the season and finishing second in the conference with seven goals in 11 games. Five of those goals either put the Blues in the lead or tied the game.
Babinski had a dominant impact on both sides of the ball, with head coach Dennis Kindel stating that her corner kicks and free kicks are the more dangerous in the league.
The awards were given out one day before the PACWEST Championships held in Squamish at Quest University. Capilano heads into the tournament as the #2 seed and will face #3 Langara College on Friday, October 27 at 5:00 p.m. The winner will advance to Saturday's final at 8:00 p.m., and the PACWEST champion will advance to the CCAA Nationals held in Halifax, N.S.
All game at the championships can be live-streamed on pacwestbc.tv.
