Capilano University’s Board of Governors welcomes new board members

North Vancouver, B.C. – Capilano University is pleased to announce the appointment of Lois Vader, Sonny Wong and Oscar Blue to its Board of Governors.
Lois Vader tem skwish, a la tuwanq, a la Lax Kw’alaams. Her father was Chief Henry Paull of the shíshálh (Sechelt) Nation. Her mother was Ruby Paull (nee Spencer) from Lax K’walaams, B.C. Vader has served as a community health representative for shíshálh Nation and a board member for Sunshine Coast Steering Committee. She completed the Registered Nursing Assistant (RNA) program from Fanshawe College and RNA Administration of Medication courses from Conestoga College. Currently, she is enrolled in NITEP, the Indigenous Teacher Education Program in The Faculty of Education at UBC, and is working towards completing her Bachelor of Education degree with an Indigenous specialization.
Sonny Wong is President and Creative Director of Hamazaki Wong Marketing Group, and Co-founder and Producer of the Leo Awards. He is a member of the Vancouver Chinatown Legacy Stewardship, Pacific Council Member of OMNI Television and Founding Director of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Foundation. Active in his community, Wong also serves on the Board of Director for the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of B.C., Daryl Duke Foundation and the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Oscar Blue is a Capilano University student completing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He serves on the Board of Governors as an elected student representative.
“It is my pleasure to welcome Lois Vader, Sonny Wong and Oscar Blue to the Board,” says Cherian Itty, chair of the Capilano University Board of Governors. “We welcome the insight and contributions they bring in furthering good governance for the University.”
Following board policy, Vader and Wong have joined the Board on a one-year term with the potential for an extended term following the initial year. Vader, Wong and Blue’s appointments commenced in August as outgoing board members Paul Dhillon and Barbara Joe, and outgoing student representative Layne North concluded their terms. Capilano University thanks them for their service to the University.
The Board of Governors oversees the affairs of the University and sets policies in accordance with the University Act of British Columbia. The Board is responsible for the management, administration and control of property revenue, business and affairs of the University.
The Board of Governors is composed of 15 members: the chancellor; president; two faculty members elected by the faculty; eight individuals appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, two of whom are to be appointed from persons nominated by the alumni association; two elected students; and one individual elected by non-faculty members.
