Capilano University announces new Bachelor of Kinesiology degree

North Vancouver, B.C. October 7, 2020 – Capilano University is pleased to announce a new Bachelor of Kinesiology degree (BKin). Beginning in fall 2021, the University’s School of Human Kinetics will become the School of Kinesiology and will offer both the new degree program and the option of a two-year diploma in Kinesiology. This replaces the University’s current two-year diploma in Human Kinetics and provides increased learning opportunities for current and future students.
“Offering a four-year degree allows our current Human Kinetics diploma students to complete their undergraduate studies at CapU, where they have established connections with faculty and gained valuable, hands-on, career-building experience,” says Lara Duke, dean of the Faculty of Global and Community Studies. “This significant addition strengthens CapU’s position as a leader in delivering exercise science programs with small class sizes and rich experiential learning opportunities.”
The degree focuses on developing students’ knowledge of how to assess, design and implement programs to facilitate health behaviour change, leading to improved lifestyles and prevention of chronic diseases. Beginning in 2023, the Bachelor in Kinesiology degree is expected to graduate approximately 50 students per year with the capacity to grow based on student interest.
“I am beyond excited to continue my learning and graduate with a degree in Kinesiology at Capilano University,” says current Human Kinetics student Samantha Doyle. “It is a huge relief that I do not need to transfer schools or change where I live. The Human Kinetics faculty at CapU make me feel supported, seen and heard. I can continue to be part of a community that I have come to love.”
Capilano University has offered a diploma in Human Kinetics for the last 17 years that allowed students to select a concentration in exercise science or physical education. However, Human Kinetics has evolved from focusing primarily on coaching and physical education, to broader investigations into the determinants of health.
Year 1 and Year 2 incorporate elements of the existing Human Kinetics diploma curriculum. The curriculum provides foundational knowledge in life, physical and social sciences, to build a holistic understanding of key health concepts. Year 3 and Year 4 will broaden the curriculum to reflect this wider perspective in current government policy directives, industry and societal needs for health sector reform. In the final two years, students will also select a concentration in either exercise science or health promotion.
