New start date for the spring term

Dear Capilano University Community,

After much deliberation and with close attention to the current state of the coronavirus situation in British Columbia, Capilano University will postpone the beginning of the Spring 2022 Term from January 5, 2022 to January 10, 2022.

This decision was made out of an abundance of caution to afford additional planning time, as needed, as we continue to monitor the COVID-19 context in the province and locally.

Please know that while the academic term will now begin on January 10, the campus is open as of January 4, 2022 and these are workdays, with services on campus provided as scheduled.

Points of note:

  • The delayed start to classes is not, at this time, anticipated to impact the end of term date, with the final day of classes slated for April 12, 2022.
  • The Bookstore and Library will reopen as previously scheduled on January 4, 2022. The Birch cafeteria will open on January 10, 2022. Please check The Bookstore and Library websites for hours of operation.
  • The Spring 2022 add/drop period is unchanged: January 5 – January 18, 2022.
  • As a temporary measure, where practical and possible, support service employees are encouraged to work from home prior to January 10, 2022.

The next update from the Province of British Columbia and the Provincial Health Officer is scheduled for Wednesday, December 29, 2021. I would encourage everyone to continue to monitor their CapU email and the Capilano University website for updates. Should we be directed to take additional measures, we will do so and communicate again later this week.

I understand this message may be discouraging as so many of us have been looking forward to the beginning of term next week. As a teaching-intensive university, we deeply value in-person experiences. While I share your disappointment at this point in time, I hope the decision to postpone the beginning of classes will serve to facilitate a stronger start for us all this Spring.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We will be together soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Laureen Styles (she/her)
Vice President, Academic & Provost
