CapU faculty Victoria Shroff receives fellowship at Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics
Capilano University instructor and animal law lawyer V. Victoria Shroff was appointed a Fellow by the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics (OCAE) at Oxford University in the United Kingdom last week. Fellowships are granted by the globally recognized research centre to individuals recognized for outstanding contributions to the field of animal ethics worldwide.
“To be appointed as an associate Fellow to the prestigious Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, UK, is a tremendous honour for me personally and professionally,” said Shroff. “As B.C.'s longest-serving animal law lawyer and one of Canada's first animal law lawyer-educators, this appointment will provide me with a global platform to help bring forward pressing ethical and legal concerns involving animals.”
The Centre comprises over 125 fellows from countries around the world. Academics—in law, sciences or humanities—who are researching or intending to research animal ethics may be considered for a fellowship position. Appointments are only offered once to successful individuals during their lifetime; just a small proportion of those nominated are eventually selected.
On June 27, 2023, Shroff was among 32 individuals appointed a fellowship of the prestigious research group, marking the largest cohort ever to be admitted at one time. In an OCAE news release, Deputy Director Dr. Clair Linzey said the large number of new fellows “is a testament to all the wonderful work being done in the field of animal ethics.”
As a fellow, Victoria Shroff will have the opportunity to teach at the OCAE summer school in the future. She continues to teach the course she developed and wrote on animal law for the School of Legal Studies at Capilano University, and to serve as an Adjunct Professor of animal law at UBC’s Peter A. Allard School of Law.
Shroff is the author of textbook Canadian Animal Law (2021), and founding chair of the Canadian Animal Law national study group. On May 2, 2023 she delivered a talk on animal sentience, Why Animals Need Law, at TEDx CapilanoU.
