North Vancouver B.C. March 4, 2024 – After eight years as president and vice-chancellor at Capilano University (CapU), Paul Dangerfield has announced that 2024-2025 will be his last academic year with the university.
CapU Board of Governors Chair Ashraf Amlani credits Dangerfield with leading the University through a period of significant growth and maturation.
“Paul embraced imagination and innovation, elevating Capilano University to serve the needs of the region,” says Amlani. “Paul’s vision and steadfast commitment helped establish CapU as a university that continues to grow, with an upcoming new Centre for Childhood Studies, its first-ever on-campus student housing, and a new campus in Squamish set to open in Fall 2024. His friendly presence and compassionate leadership, both within the University and with community partners, will be greatly missed.”
Amlani points to the development and implementation of CapU’s guiding documents—Envisioning 2030 and Illuminating 2030—as well as the integrated budget planning process, as examples of how Dangerfield’s leadership has supported CapU’s journey to a comprehensive regional university. She also credits Dangerfield with ensuring the University continued to move forward in challenging times.
“Paul led the University through a period of massive change caused by the pandemic,” says Amlani. “He ensured CapU continued to bring in new talent and create an exceptional experience for students and employees to thrive during this period while maintaining financial stability,” says Amlani.
Capilano University now offers over 100 programs across five faculties out of multiple campuses and learning locations, and consistently earns a spot on BC’s Top Employers list.
In a message to the CapU community, Dangerfield noted that the decision to leave came after a great deal of thought and reflection. “My years at CapU, since I arrived in 2016, have been some of the most rewarding of my career, and I am inspired by all we have achieved together during that time,” he said. “At the core of everything we’ve done has been a focus on imagination, community, a distinct university experience, and health and well-being.”
The Board of Governors has begun a search for a new president, and Dangerfield will remain in his role until a replacement is in place, up to spring 2025.
