Mathematics & Statistics Department
Patience. Problem solving. Critical thinking. Discipline. These are the among the skills that improve when you learn mathematics. Gain foundational knowledge in math as a springboard to your future.
Why study mathematics at CapU?
Math is a universal language. Learn how to speak it and you’ll unlock doors to great jobs in business, the sciences, finance, engineering and technology.
While learning mathematics may be challenging at times, CapU stands out in our ability to give students extra-curricular support. Our Math Learning Centre is staffed entirely by department instructors, so you can drop in any time during the day for one-on-one help. You’ll also have access to study areas, reference materials and technological equipment.
Career paths and further education
Mathematics courses are a requirement for CapU’s Bachelor of Science degree, engineering transfer programs and Associate of Science degrees. A STEM degree program at any institution will require mathematics, and CapU credits can be transferred to other universities. We also offer courses for non-science majors, specifically for students who plan to become elementary school teachers.
Studying mathematics enhances your problem-solving and modelling skills, while statistics teaches how to read graphs, interpret data and build hypothesis. These skills are essential for a broad range of careers, from the health and medical fields to business.
Related programs
Mathematics and statistics courses can be applied to many CapU programs, including:
Mathematics and statistics courses
CapU offers a suite of first- and second-year math and statistics courses as well as some upgrading courses, such as Math 105 (precalculus).
Third- and fourth-year math and stat courses are featured in the Bachelor of Science concentration in computational science.
Not sure which course you should sign up for? Start by reviewing our Math & Statistics Course Sequence Flowchart (pdf).
Thinking of transferring to another university? Consult the BC Transfer Guide to learn about transferring credits to other institutions.
Note that many of our courses require graphing calculators. Review Student Resources for important details about requirements, preferred models and rental opportunities.

Student opportunities
Find out important information here about competitions, math placement tests and upcoming workshops.
And don’t miss the Student Resources section below for information about graphing calculator requirements, plus links to help you get started on learning, connecting and building your career.
Events and workshops for CapU students
Graphing calculator workshops
CapU holds workshops each term for students to learn how to use their graphing calculators.
Math placement test
Before registering for a course, you may be required to take a math placement test to assess your level of mathematics skill. Check the Math Placement Test (MPT) page for further details and upcoming dates.
Public speakers
We hold seminars twice a year, inviting speakers to campus to discuss a variety of topics. These will be advertised within the classrooms.
BC Secondary School Math Contest
Capilano University takes part in this annual contest, which consists of two rounds of competition at the junior (grades 8-10) and senior (grades 11 and 12) levels. The preliminary round is held in April at local secondary schools and the top performers are invited to CapU in May to participate in the final round.
If you are a high school math teacher who would like to have your class or school participate in the contest, please contact CapU math instructor Marsha Anderson. You may also be interested in viewing the BCSS contest papers from previous years.
Student resources
Use following resources to help with your learning and build new connections.
- Math Learning Centre: Drop in for one-on-one assistance with problems related to a course taken at CapU (open Monday to Friday and staffed by mathematics and statistics instructors)
- Tiskills.com: Develop your graphing calculator skills
- SNAP Mathematics Foundation: Tips and information for prospective elementary math teachers
- Canadian Mathematical Society: Professional association for Canadian mathematicians
Student equipment: graphing calculator
A graphing calculator is required for courses numbered Math 101 and higher, with the exception of Math 123 and Math 190. For 100-level courses and Math 205, we recommend a Texas instruments TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator.
Math 230 and Math 235 require a graphing calculator with symbolic capabilities. For these courses, we recommend a TI-89 calculator. Please note that symbolic calculators are not allowed in a first-year math course.
If you have a different brand of calculator, please seek approval from your math instructor at the start of semester and be prepared to learn how to use it on your own. CapU offers a limited number of calculators that may be rented on a term basis through the Capilano University Bookstore.
