Meet Tania Loken, an instructor and convenor in the Diploma in Tourism Management International program at CapU.
Starting her career in Whistler, B.C. during the key market development years, Tania Loken worked in sales roles for major industry players, including Tourism Whistler, Delta (opening), Westin (opening), Sheraton, Marriott and Intrawest (Whistler Blackcomb and Panorama Mountain Resorts).
We spoke to Tania about her career highlights and her views on the evolving field of tourism and hospitality.
What do you enjoy the most about teaching at CapU?
My favourite part is witnessing the transformation of our students in the industry outside of the classroom. I also enjoy our field trips and work-integrated learning opportunities.
What essential skills does every tourism management professional need?
Exceptional listening skills and teamwork. Also, understanding what our customers need and what our industry needs.
What are some common misconceptions about the tourism and hospitality industry?
A lot of people think it’s a transient, low-skilled job, but that is not the case. The Diploma in Tourism Management International will give you the skills you need to succeed in the industry and beyond. There is a lot of interest in our students [from potential employers] beyond what we do.
What advice would you offer students interested in a tourism/hospitality career?
Working in your community is important. Volunteer at events, even here at CapU. Help with events important for the community, like the CapU Street Party, and make meaningful connections.
Tell us about your other hobbies and interests.
Well, I’m a mom (laughs). I love spending time in the forest, hiking, going to the beach and sailing in the ocean.
My family and I try to get outside as much as we can, skiing, skating and doing all sorts of things that our teenagers love.

Diploma in Tourism Management InternationalWhat are the must-see spots for a first-time visit to Vancouver?
Oh, there’s so much to do! Visiting our local mountains is important. The perspective that you can get from the mountains in Vancouver is amazing. It’s super unique to the city. Not a lot of people outside of Vancouver have this experience.
What’s your best travel tip?
Pack lightly. I take with me as little as I can so I can gain as much as I can from the destination that I’m coming to.
