Artist Ben Tour selected to brighten kálax-ay, the Sunshine Coast campus of Capilano University
NORTH VANCOUVER B.C. September 26, 2018 – Images that incorporate bursts of colour, expert shading and kinetic lines are to transform a dull wall on the edge of a parking lot in Sechelt by the end of October. Illustrator Ben Tour has been selected to paint a mural at kálax-ay, the Sunshine Coast campus of Capilano University.
Residents of the Sunshine Coast can see Tour's work on a wall installation at Beachcomber Coffee Company in Gibsons. In Vancouver, Tour has painted murals for organizations that include the Vancouver Mural Festival, Mozilla and Red Bull. His artwork for Bohdi Jones's album "Bones" was nominated for a Juno Award in 2014 and Tour's fine art has shown in galleries across Canada and the U.S.
Tour's murals crackle with colour and movement and often feature animals such as birds of prey and wolves.
"I like to spark imaginations," says the father of two. "My artist's statement today is: let's have fun!"
Those who've seen Tour's bold, illustrative style of mural can't wait to see his work transform the east-facing exterior wall at the Sunshine Coast campus.
"The mural at kálax-ay is going to be a wonderful, welcoming addition," says Laureen Styles, vice-president academic and provost of Capilano University. "Tour is an exciting local talent."
The Sunshine Coast campus mural project follows the painting of nine murals at Capilano University's North Vancouver campus to commemorate the University's 50th anniversary.
Tour, a resident of the Sunshine Coast, is poised to paint his mural between October 9 and 19.
