As parents or older siblings, we are often the recipients of children’s creative endeavors. Their drawings, paintings and other artwork make their way to our bulletin boards, refrigerators, and desks. While we proudly display what they have created, most of us don’t give much thought to how it was created or how the act of drawing can draw us together.

Sylvia Kind, instructor and atelierista with Capilano University’s Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) program, encourages us to look at drawing differently: to consider how we think about the act of drawing, rather than the drawn image, and how it creates life together.

Kind has spent considerable time in the Children’s Centre with educators and toddlers, documenting drawing events, and their collective research has inspired an exhibition. Aptly named, “More than the Mark,” her exhibit is currently running at the Brackendale Art Gallery in Squamish. Kind’s collection features photos, videos, drawings, and soundscapes that create a space of togetherness and curiosity.

You can check out More than the Mark: The generosities and hospitalities of young children’s drawing at the Brackendale Art Gallery through Sunday, June 16. On Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to noon, you can speak with Sylvia Kind at the meet the artist event.

In September, Capilano University will open the doors of its new Squamish campus, where it will offer an Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) diploma and degree—along with several other programs. The Brackendale Art Gallery exhibit will provide ECCE faculty an opportunity to meet community members and showcase the Centre for Research and Childhood Studies at CapU.

Visit the Brackendale Art Gallery website to learn more about the exhibit and to register for free tickets.
