June 12, 2013: Capilano University's Board of Governors approved the revised annual operating budget at its June 11 board meeting held at the University's North Vancouver campus.
The decision, originally slated to occur at the May 14 Board meeting, had been delayed based on a recommendation from University President Kris Bulcroft, to allow Senate additional time for consultation and to review the budget. The original motion put forward was amended to request "that Senate attempt to balance the 2013-2014 budget without cuts to programs and sections in order to allow the next year for consultation."

June 10, 2013: At the June 10 meeting of Capilano University's Senate, the Senate Budget Advisory Committee made the motion that the Senate recommend to the Board of Governors the revised proposed budget plan as at June 7, which includes the following list of budget adjustments:
- Parking increase: $18,000
- Suspend BC CEOs membership: $8,000
- Increase in seat max: $20,000
- Sections given from Faculty of Health, Education & Human Development: 2 sections
The motion was carried. The University's Board of Governors will make a decision on the 2013-2014 annual operating budget at their regular board meeting on June 11.
June 8, 2013: The Senate Budget Advisory Committee has completed its review of the 2013-14 Budget.
May 22, 2013: At the May 14, 2013 meeting of the Capilano University Board of Governors, the Board passed a motion that directs the Senate to "attempt to balance the 2013-14 budget without cuts to programs and sections in order to allow the next year for consultation." The Senate has now received and understood the motion made at the May 14 Board of Governors meeting regarding Capilano University's 2013-14 budget. The Senate Budget Advisory Committee (SBAC) has now been convened and has begun the process as directed by the motion.

Budget 2013-14 Background
Background information on the 2013-14 budget recommendations
In early April, Capilano University's Board of Governors directed the executive team to balance the 2013/14 budget as required by the University Act. Doing so required us to review, in a compressed time frame, our programs and services to find ways to eliminate the projected $1.3 million shortfall.
In past years we balanced our operating budget by identifying and implementing cost-efficiency measures and reducing administrative costs including not filling a number of vacancies. We have reached the point where further cuts would have an impact on the quality of education and support for all students.
Our operating costs continue to face inflationary pressures, and the transition to a university has resulted in some increased costs, however, our operating grants have remained flat. In order to balance the budget, we have had to make recommendations to continue to shape Capilano in ways that will build on our core strengths, increase our sustainability and continue to increase quality as a learner-centered university. This means some programs and courses have to be suspended in order to meet the budget shortfall. Rather than do across-the-board cuts, which affect quality for every student, we are suspending intakes in some programs and reducing classes in some areas. There will also be no increase to services, staffing, and equipment and some capital projects will be suspended.
These actions were required to eliminate the projected $1.3 million shortfall and to prepare for the current fiscal challenges facing the entire post-secondary sector.
We will continue to ensure access for students already in programs at Capilano University and will ensure timely progress to program completion. We are also maintaining services to support student success.
