Bio
Masa Takei worked in management consulting in Asia, Europe, and North America before turning to a career as a freelance writer. He’s since written for various mediums including feature articles for magazines and newspapers, chapter contributions for books, and produced screenplays for feature films.
He’s been a writer on contract for such organizations as the Canadian Tourism Commission and AOL Travel. And worked with companies, Arc’teryx and Easton, on book projects. In collaboration with a broadcaster, he scripted, hosted, and filmed a real-time HD YouTube channel while building an off-grid cabin on Haida Gwaii. The series culminated with a television documentary.
Takei has had the privilege of teaching with his colleagues in the School of Communication since 2014. Off-campus, he’s served as the training officer for a search & rescue team and delivered instruction in the military as an active Canadian Ranger.
Since real human beings are involved in all our interactions, what I hope that students develop in their personal and professional lives is a sincere interest in other people and the ability to engage with others both through media and IRL.
I believe that it’s best to learn by doing. Practical skills come with actual practice. To this end, I strive to provide a safe environment to make mistakes, support in doing things that are challenging, and foster opportunities for students to exercise their own curiosity about the world.
