News release: Capilano University secures student housing for Squamish campus (PDF)

NORTH VANCOUVER B.C. May 29, 2024 – Capilano University announced plans to offer guaranteed on-campus student housing for all students enrolled at its new Squamish campus when it opens in September 2024.

With $48 million in funding from the provincial government, Capilano University purchased three purpose-built student-housing buildings on the Squamish campus for $55 million. Adjacent to the main academic and student services building, the three facilities offer 333 beds, including single rooms paired with a shared washroom, as well as accessible units with private washrooms.

Since purchasing the 18-acre Squamish campus in August of 2023, Capilano University has been actively pursuing options for student housing.

“Housing availability in the Sea-to-Sky corridor is almost non-existent, and we recognize that creates a significant barrier for many learners who wish to study in Squamish,” explains Paul Dangerfield, president of Capilano University. “We are pleased to be able to offer guaranteed on-campus housing to any student who enrols at CapU Squamish for Fall 2024.”

“Secure, stable and affordable housing is essential for students to be successful with their studies, while also reducing demand on the local rental housing market,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Capilano University students in the Sea-to-Sky corridor will now have the option to live steps away from their classes, making it easier to focus on their studies and get the skills they need to thrive in B.C.”

The three student housing facilities are clustered together in the heart of the campus, just steps away from dining, recreation and student services. Each building was designed to create a strong community of learning and foster a sense of belonging.

“Fall 2024 is our starting point,” says Dangerfield. “We’ll keep building and growing from there, with more classes, programs, students and employees each year. For those who choose to join us at CapU Squamish in Fall 2024, they’ll have the unique opportunity to be the very first students at the new campus. They’ll benefit from small classes, individualized support, active and engaging learning experiences drawing on place, and a curated selection of programs and courses, all in a stunningly beautiful location.”

The acquisition of three student housing buildings will accommodate growth in enrolment, and ease housing and transportation pressures in the region. The purpose-built buildings are zoned exclusively for student housing use.

Applications are open for the following programs offered at CapU Squamish in Fall 2024:

Applications for student housing will open on June 3 at capilanou.ca/squamish-housing.
