Capilano University remains committed to reaching a negotiated settlement with MoveUP Local 378. Since June 6, there has been an informal meeting and daily emails between Capilano University leadership and MoveUP Local 378 union representatives with the goal of resolving the strike. This morning, the bargaining committees met again.

Both parties have consistently agreed that the single outstanding issue remains the union's position on adding remote work language into the collective agreement. As recently as June 14, MoveUP said on their website “There is only one issue remaining, everything else has been agreed upon. That one issue is to put rules in the contract to enforce how any remote work will be done.”

Today, the University presented a fourth proposal with respect to remote work, which commits to an appeals process outside of the collective agreement. MoveUP agreed to the University’s proposal in principle and in substance, pending receipt of the letter and confirmation of agreement of the precise wording. The issue is resolved.

The University believed a tentative agreement had been reached. The University believed all other matters had been resolved, consistent with MoveUP’s communications identifying remote work as the single outstanding issue. MoveUP then indicated there were still three additional outstanding issues to resolve. After further discussion, MoveUP concluded they believe there are still two outstanding issues.

Classes at Capilano University remain disrupted due to strike action; students should watch their CapU email for regular updates. The University’s main campus remains open, kálax-ay Sunshine Coast campus is closed, and CapU Lonsdale is open with reduced hours and services. We are actively working to resolve the strike to continue serving students and employees at CapU without further disruption.

CapU remains committed to our students, and to the negotiating process with our employees. We want to resume normal operations on our campuses. We are actively working hard at reaching a resolution quickly so we can continue to provide the high-quality educational services our students have come to expect when they chose to attend CapU.
