In this course students learn how to recognize avalanche terrain, understand the avalanche forecast, plan trips, and perform a companion rescue. Upon successful completion students will receive Avalanche Canada certification Level 1.

Students will further develop their skills in navigation with map and compass, wilderness travel, survival skills, and mountain sense. Students will also develop a proficiency with electronic navigation apps, such as Gaia, and be able to implement a route plan while using this technology to provide a quality experience for themselves and others. Upon successful completion students will receive the Outdoor Council of Canada Map, Navigation and Compass certifications.

- To achieve Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) certification in Overnight Field Leader, students must have earned Field Leader Paddling in WLP 137. To achieve Paddle Canada Level 2 Skills in WLP 138, students must have earned Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills previously. Proof of certification is required.

Students will learn how to lead longer trips in low-risk terrain classes relevant to their activity. Students who have earned Field Leader Hiking in REC 148 may also earn the following Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) certifications, if industry certificate requirements are met: Field Leader Overnight (Hiking), Go Outside (Map), Go Outside (Compass) certifications.

This course integrates the Avalanche Canada AST 2 curriculum that includes the daily process for decision making and interpreting avalanche problems with a similar approach used by avalanche professionals. Over seven overnight field days skills are expanded from the AST 1 course, and WLP 164, providing more advanced decision-making framework for travelling in avalanche terrain, leadership, snow science and weather. Upon successful completion students will be eligible to receive Avalanche Canada certification in Avalanche Skills Training Level 2.
