This course explores the development of media technologies in relation to key social, cultural and political challenges faced by human societies. It focuses on the development of media prior to the emergence of digital technologies in the 20th century, considering the role that orality, writing systems, pre- and post-print literacies, acoustic and visual media and mass media have played as both expressions of historical potentials and foundations for social, political and cultural change.
